Washing Machine
07/06/2010
I got up early ( for a Sunday ) to do some house cleaning and my washing.
1st up to wash was my work shirts as I needed them for the coming week at work.
Everything seemed going normal until the machine started making weird noises.
I opened the lid, something didn’t seem right. I rearranged the clothes and shut the lid.
The noises were even worse now. But the machine got off balance and stopped.
I re-arranged the clothes again and shut the lid.
A few seconds after shutting the lid there was a loud bang, then smoke started pouring out of the machine.
Luckily we have a Safety switch that tripped the instant the machine died.
I turned off the machine at the power point then turned the safety switch back on, but it would not click in.
It turns out that I couldn’t turn the safety switch back on until the machine was unplugged from the wall even though it was turned off.
The machine had died in a very bad way.
Eventually the house was filled with this smoke that gave me a headache and made me feel nauseous. It took about 30mins with the front and back door open with the ducted air-conditioner blowing on full to clear it all out.
I wonder what would have happened to me also if there was no safety switch. I was holding the sides of the machine when it blew.
$100 switch may have saved me from getting zapped or a fire.
I have always been a strong believer in the safety switches and this re-enforces it.
I strongly urge anyone who does not have a safety switch to get one installed.
As for the washer, it is no more. I have ordered a new machine (LG WD11020D).
The old one did its job, it is about 15 years old. A freebie from my parents after I moved out of home.
I knew I would have to be replacing it soon as it has been leaking and its noisy, but I can’t complain.
It did the job for me for 1 1/2 years.
