Other issues with Internet Filtering
16/06/2010
Since the government seems to want to continue with its filtering system, I feel the need to discuss some other issues with the system that I have not seen much discussion on.
The first one is something @newtonmark tweeted about. Anonymous was successful taking down government pages with only a small number of people involved.
What would happen if hackers pointed their bots to a major ISP’s filtering system. I imagine that it wouldn’t be too hard to take down an entire ISP, especially if Youtube traffic is enough to slow the filter down as Stepen Conroy said.
On a similar topic but a slightly different tactic. The filtering software is going to be pretty standard across Australia. It makes it an even better target for hackers.
Imagine if a hacking group launched an attack on the filtering systems at some of the major ISP’s around Australia.
Now instead of taking them down, they just add a few more things to the black list, lets say www.google.com, news.com.au, afp.gov.au, youtube.com, etc.
If anyone goes to those websites they will be hit with a government page saying that access is denied. This is an inconvenience in itself and could cost businesses around Australia millions of dollars depending on down time.
But what if the access denied page was also hacked and replaced with say porn?
Now when someone goes to www.google.com they will get a page full of porn.
You can thank Stephen Conroy, Kevin Rudd and the rest of the Labor government for pushing Australia down this road of vulnerability.
The last point is about RC games. Now to sell a game in Australia it needs to be classified which is kind of fair enough for big budget games.
But what about simple flash games on facebook or on other websites.
No one is going to go pay thousands of dollars to get website games rated for Australia.
If you don’t get it classified then its automatically Refused Classification.
So this technically means all website games that have not been sent through the censor are illegal and banned.
I would love to see a big site like facebook submit every single game to the censors and watch them take 40 years to go through them all.
This censorship madness needs to stop.
We should be pushing for freedom of speach and expression laws, not for further restrictions of our rights.
