Great Firewall of Australia – Youtube

Posted on by John

In an interview with the ABC’s Hungry Beast Stephen Conroy said applying ISP filters to high-traffic sites such as YouTube would slow down the internet.
So to handle this they are trying to work with Google to get videos removed from Youtube for Australian users which does not meet the RC guidelines.

Only a few weeks ago Conroy was going on about how there will be NO impact on speed or if there is it will be negligable. Now he is saying it WILL impact high traffic sites. Which one is it no impact or yes impact. It seems like Conroy is developing policy on the fly just to justify himself.

So if it affects Youtube, then what about other video sites like break.com or collage humor? Is Conroy going to give all video sites the same special treatment so they are not going through the filter? If he doesn’t then it means these sites will be slow for all Australians. But then what is the chance of him getting a foreign company to remove all Refused Classification content from their servers. About 0% chance I think. The guidelines on what is Refused Classification is so vague and made up on the go anyway.

Then you get to the other issue, if it affects high traffic video sites, then what about high traffic sites like Facebook or Flickr. They have lots of images and millions of users what is the impact on these sites.
Another side of the situation is what if I want to start a website that is a direct competitor to Youtube. Can I apply to not be filtered also like Youtube or does Youtube automatically get a competative advantage sanctioned by the government?

The more we hear about this filter the more we see how unworkable it is, yet Conroy goes along on his merry way ignoring the facts and public opinion.

Australian Communications Minister Senator Stephen Conroy needs to be sacked!
